Although how or where we will be reborn is generally dependent on karmic forces, our state of mind at the time of death can influence the quality of our next rebirth. Ultimately, the moment of death consciousness is all that counts. However, it is also heedless to think that one can keep focusing on wholesome deeds at that time. Since as death approaches, it is very difficult for one to avoid the unhappy state and to maintain right thought or recite the Buddha’s name single-mindedly at such time. All kinds of evil Karma in one’s live may come in effect by the time of dying, which may weaken one’s body and perturb one’s mind, leading directly to the lower realms.

• Those who have led a life with comparable merits and demerits. Some people may have karma that is neither extremely good nor extremely bad. Some views making merit as a form of investment while always living a life breaking all precepts. In these circumstances, habitual actions may become the major influence on their fate. After death, some may have to queue up and wait for the final judgment. However, those who commit evil acts, for example, of defamation of Buddha images will end up in the subterranean world (plane of misery).
• Those who commit bad karma such as commission of the five heinous crimes (garu-kamma (weighty karma) such as matricide, patricide, killing an Arahant, wounding the Buddha, creating a schism in the Sangha Order)) will take effect regardless of other karma upon death. They go directly to the lowest plane of Naraka.
• Those who have mostly performed meritorious deeds and accumulated wholesome Karma. These are practicing Buddhists who wish to end the cycle of life and death, i.e., vipassana meditation practitioner. Samatha meditation, unlike Vipassana meditation, is of little use in the mental purification of defilements, as it only temporarily suppresses vices and defilements within. If ones die during Samatha meditation they would be reborn in the Brahma worlds of the astral planes. After that, the fruits of accumulated, rampant and unwholesome karma may ripen and also cut into the line, and consequently shifting the rebirth onto the lower animal realms.

That being said, uncertainty prevails if ones do not attain a state of mind with enough purification by vipassana meditation. There are, still, a lot of people with misconception. They got stuck on meritorious actions with ‘Material Worship’. They performed charitable deeds out of greedy, heedless mind just to accumulate merits for their own benefits and happiness, not the ‘Practical Worship’ for the purification of their mind which is the only way to break free from the vicious cycle of death and rebirth. It is such a pity to see persons who develop obsessive craving, fierce longings, and burning ambitions that can never be satisfied, especially those who are thoughtless and ungrateful to their motherland and the noble religion of the Great Buddha.

The law of Karma can sometimes be fierce and fearsome but it all boils down to one’s action according to the Buddha as he simply put ‘As one sows, so shall one reap’. Seek no Master to ask where you will end up after death. The best answer lies within you and your mind. Are you living a life with frightened, fearful feelings of your own evil acts that may come around, or serene and complacent mind undisturbed to own retribution?

…that is the Answer.

ตายแล้วไปไหน?

ตายแล้วไปไหน…..เป็นคำถามง่าย ๆ ที่คนอยากรู้อยู่เสมอ

คำตอบที่คนส่วนใหญ่มักคิดแบบรวบความก็คือ “ไปสวรรค์หรือนรก แล้วแต่กรรมดีกรรมชั่วที่ทำไว้” ซึ่งในความเป็นจริง มีรายละเอียดปลีกย่อยที่กว่าจะไปถึงสวรรค์หรือลงนรกนั้น ก็มีหลักวิธีที่ควรรู้ไว้โดยความสำคัญอันดับแรกคือ

จิตดวงสุดท้ายก่อนที่จะตาย จะเป็นจิตดวงแรกที่พาไปจุติ หมายถึง ผู้ตาย ตายด้วยจิตลักษณะใด ณ ขณะจิตนั้น จะเป็นดวงจิตที่พาไปเกิดในภพภูมิใหม่ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นผู้ทำกรรมดีมามาก แต่เคยมีกรรมชั่วติดค้างใจ นึกขึ้นมาเมื่อไหร่ก็เสียใจ เสียวสันหลัง หรือมีความหวาดกลัวผลกรรม ที่จะตามสนอง พอถึงเวลาใกล้จะตาย จิตจะอ่อนแรงเหมือนคนที่ไม่ได้นอนมาทั้งคืน หากกรรมที่เคยทำไว้หรือสิ่งที่ติดค้างใจมีพลังแรง จิตสังขารนั้นก็สามารถแทรกทะลุกรรมดีใด ๆ ให้พุ่งหน้ามาส่งผลก่อน ทำให้กลายเป็นคนที่แม้ทำดีมาพอควร แต่กลับไปจุติในอบายภูมิก่อนได้

ดังนั้น การประคองจิตดวงสุดท้ายก่อนจะตาย ให้นึกถึงแต่สิ่งดี ๆ และสูง ๆ เช่น พระพุทธเจ้า พระอรหันต์ และสูงสุดคือนิพพาน จะทำให้ผู้ใกล้ตายได้มีโอกาสไปจุติในที่สูงก่อนในช่วงสั้น ๆ เมื่อหมดอายุขัยแล้ว ก็ไปเสวยกรรมวิบากทั้งชั่วและดีที่สะสมไว้ต่อไปในภพภูมิอื่น

การจะคิดว่า พอถึงเวลาใกล้จะตายจะเล็งจิตให้คิดถึงพุทโธ หรือพระอรหันต์ไว้ให้ได้ นั่นเป็นความไม่รู้แท้และประมาทอย่างมาก เพราะจิตที่มีกรรมหรือมีเหตุติดค้างใจรุนแรง เช่นความพยาบาท ความห่วงใย ความหวงแหน จิตประเภทนี้มีพลังมาก พอถึงเวลาจิตอ่อนใกล้หมดลม พลังพยาบาทหรือจิตที่ยึดมั่นอยู่นั้นก็จะ พุ่งทะลุกำแพงสังขารออกมาก่อนคนอื่นๆ เพราะแรงมากกว่าคนอื่น พอพุ่งมาเสียแล้วก็หมดสิทธิ์คิดถึงพุทโธ เพราะจิตขาดกำลังต้าน เพราะเวลาสังขารนั้นมาจะโถมมาเป็นพายุแรงมาก คนมีจิตพยาบาท หวงแหนสูง จึงไปเกิดในอบายภูมิ เช่น ไปจุติทันทีเป็นเปรต หรืออสุรกาย หรือไม่ก็ถูกดูดลงไปเกิดเป็นสัตว์เดรัจฉานทันที เช่น งู จระเข้ สุนัขที่ดุร้าย เป็นต้น ที่เป็นเช่นนี้ก็เพราะ จิตที่พุ่งออกมาคือกิเลสที่ดุร้ายที่มีกระแสไปพ้องกับจิตสัตว์เหล่านี้ เป็นเรื่องของกระแสพลังงาน พอจิตสังขารถูกกระแสเหล่านี้พุ่งนำหน้าไป ก็จะถูกดูดให้ไปเข้าหากระแสพลังงานที่มีคลื่นเดียวกัน ทำให้เกิดเป็นสัตว์เดรัจฉานได้โดยง่าย

ส่วนคนที่มีจิตเหล่านี้บางเบา และทำความดีมาพอตัว หากนึกถึงพระรัตนตรัยก่อนตายได้ ก็ไปจุติในภูมิสวรรค์ได้ทันทีเช่นกัน เช่น ไปจุติภูมิเทวดาได้ตามกำลังจิตและด้วยฐานบุญที่สร้างมา เมื่อหมดอายุขัยจากตรงนั้นแล้วก็จะไปจุติที่ศูนย์รวมกรรม เพื่อไปรับใช้บาป หรือไม่ก็ไปจุติเป็นมนุษย์หรือเป็นสัตว์แล้วแต่กำลังกรรมของตน ผู้ที่มีกรรมดีมาพอตัว แต่หากเวลาใกล้ตายแล้วไม่สามารถน้อมจิตคิดถึงกรรมดีได้ เพราะเกิดตายแบบฉับพลันไม่ทันตั้งหลัก กระแสจิตก็จะพัดลงไปที่โลกวิญญาณ ให้มาถึงทางแยกที่จะตัดสินว่า จะไปสู่นรกหรือสวรรค์….. นี่หมายถึงเฉพาะผู้ที่ตายตามอายุขัย แต่ผู้ที่ตายก่อนอายุขัยก็อีกแบบนึง เรียกว่า เรื่องตายแล้วไปไหนมีความสลับซับซ้อนมาก
